AIKEN, S.C. – Steve Tucker and Sherri Kiklas earned 1998 U.S. National Rowing Team berths Monday by winning the men's lightweight and women's lightweight single sculls competitions, respectively, at the 1998 USRowing National Team Singles Trials.

In the men's lightweight single, Steve Tucker (Mooresville, Ind.), the 1997 U.S. National Team lightweight single sculler, defeated Greg Ruckman (Wyoming, Ohio) by two seconds to earn the national team berth. Tucker finished third in Saturday's first final before storming back to take the second and third races in the best two-out-of-three finals format. The Mooresville, Ind. native stroked a 6:57.1 Monday to earn his second consecutive national team berth.

In the women's lightweight single, Sherri Kiklas (Lake Forest, Calif.) edged out Lisa Schlenker (Lake Oswego, Ore.) by 0.2 seconds. Kiklas also won the second and third finals races to come back to earn a national team berth. Kiklas finished with a time of 7:49.7, while Schlenker finished with a time of 7:49.9.

Tucker and Kiklas join Jamie Koven (Green Village, N.J.) and Leslie Rawley (Rumson, N.J.) as 1998 National Team members. Yesterday, Koven and Rawley won the men's and women's open weight single sculls competitions, respectively.

All four athletes will represent the United States at the 1998 FISA World Rowing Championships in September in Cologne, Germany.
