Tucker and Ruckman Lead Way on First Day of Trials

(from USRowing Communications Director Brett Johnson)

INDIANAPOLIS – Steve Tucker, a Mooresville, Ind., native, and Greg Ruckman, a Wyoming, Ohio, native, began their quest to earn a world championships' berth in the men's lightweight double sculls competition Sunday by winning the first heat of the lightweight double at the USRowing National Team Doubles and Quads Trials at Eagle Creek Park.

Representing USRowing's Augusta Training Center, Tucker and Ruckman, who faced off against each other in the finals of the lightweight single sculls competition in Augusta, Ga., in May, easily won their heat by more than five seconds. Second place went to the Potomac double of Sean and Conal Groom.

The closest race of the day was the second heat of the men's lightweight double sculls as James Martinez and Cooper Wessells narrowly defeated Ransom Weaver and Greg Kamplan. Martinez and Wessells crossed the finish line 0.5 seconds before Weaver and Kamplan.

In the first heat of the women's open weight double sculls, Augusta Training Center's Laurel Korholz and Carol Skricki cruised to a 3.5-second victory over Kathy Scanlon and Julia Chlicki. In the second heat, Karen Solem and Christine Holzer, also from the Augusta Training Center, won by 1.4 seconds. Neither boat was challenged during the final 500 meters.

In the men's open weight double sculls competition, Cyrus Beasley and Aquil Abdullah won the first heat by four seconds. Augusta Training Center's double of Ian McGowan and Dan Protz easily won the second heat by 6.5 seconds.

The USRowing National Team Trials for double and quadruple sculls continue Monday at 7:30 a.m. with repechages (second-chance races). Sunday's winners advanced directly to the finals, which start Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. The finals, which are raced in a best two-out-of-three format, continue Wednesday and Thursday, if necessary.
