Two years after the cancellation of the C.R.A.S.H.-B. coxswain race, we learned a underground group of coxswains, still reeling over the loss of their event have been holding secret erg races, calling them the COX-B's.
Few details of the secret race were made available, as the group worried C.R.A.S.H.-B. organizers go to any lengths stop all coxswain racing, but they have been held for two years at two different boathouses on the eve of the "other race." In order to compete no participant may be taller than 5'5".
"2ks are a right, not a privilege," said one coxswain who asked to remain anonymous. "We are exercising our right to exercise and win a hammer."
When asked why they wouldn't just race in the lightweight division at C.R.A.S.H.-B.'s, one responded, "I didn't want the race to be that competitive!"
The group, which many believe is run by a CRASH-B insider who is also a coxswain, has made tentative outreach attempts to the folks who run crash-b.com, who have set up an online petition at change.org to have the races reinstated. Scott Laffer of crash-b.com was not contacted for comment.
The group said that coxswains are looking forward to the possibility of one day being able to race with the "big kids" again, but for now, they are just content that they can, for 8 minutes a year, feel really athletic.
Edit 7am: A splinter group of rowers petitioning to have coxswains reinstated while banning rowers at the C.R.A.S.H.-B. was created this morning; watch row2k.com for more on this development.
