Twenty-one national titles were awarded on Saturday on the final day of competition at the 2009 USRowing National Championships on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The 138th running of the regatta featured Olympic medalists, world champions and many of the nation's top athletes who are in training for the 2009 FISA World Rowing Championships.
In the women's eight, USRowing Training Center's A boat of Katie Bitz, Susan Francia, Caroline Lind, Kady Glessner, Anna Goodale, Mara Allen, Esther Lofgren, Lindsay Shoop and Erin Cafaro recorded a 12-second victory over the USRowing Training Center B boat of Katelin, Snyder, Megan Smith, Jamie Redman, Elle Logan, Laura Larsen-Strecker, Amanda Polk, Kelsie Chaudoin, Karen Colwell and Suzanne Van Fleet. The winning crew finished with a time of 6:13.035, while the second-place boat clocked a 6:25.288. Canada's London Training Center crew of Lesley Thompson-Willie, Pegg deVos, Sarah Waterfield, Ashley Brozozowicz, Romina Stefancic, Larissa Lagzdins, Stephanie Morrison, Jane Rumball and Emma Darling finished third in a 6:27.922.
USRowing Training Center took the top three spots in the men's eight. The crew of Marcus McElhenney, Ross James, Grant James, Alex Osborne, Henrik Rummel, Giuseppe Lanzone, Mike Holbrook, Beau Hoopman and Steve Kasprzyk clocked a 5:38.797 to finish a little more than one second ahead of Ned DelGuercio, Brett Newlin, Jake Cornelius, Steve Coppola, Cameron Winklevoss, David Banks, Charlie Cole, Tyler Winklevoss and Troy Kepper. The second-place boat finished with a time of 5:39.984. The bronze-medal USTC boat of Dan Connolly, Sebastian Peterlin, Max Goff, Brad Bertoldo, Aaron Frankel, Neill McPeak, Martin Reschke, Mike Gilson and Josh Novak stroked a 5:41.511.
In the women's single sculls, USRowing Training Center's Ellen Tomek defeated teammate Brett Sickler by less than a boat length to win the gold medal. Tomek held off a late charge from Sickler, crossing the finish line with a time of 7:36.742. Sickler clocked a 7:38.228. USTC's Megan Kalmoe edged out Potomac Boat Club's Mae Joyce Gay by 0.074 seconds to take the bronze medal.
Penn AC's Christopher DeFelice won the men's single sculls by just under three seconds over Potomac Boat Club's William Greer. DeFelice and Greer were virtually even at the midway point of the race before DeFelice slowly pulled away in the final 1,000 meters, crossing the finish line in a 7:09.442. Greer finished with a time of 7:12.13, followed by GMS Rowing Center's James McGaffigan in a 7:13.994.
Undine Barge Club's Meghan Sarbanis dominated the lightweight women's single sculls. Sarbanis took a six-second lead in the first half of the race before cruising to nearly a nine-second victory. Sarbanis clocked a 7:43.35. New York Athletic Club's Sarah Bates-Johnson finished second in a 7:52.126, while GMS Rowing Center's Victoria Burke finished with a time of 7:54.895.
In the lightweight men's single sculls, Ottawa Rowing Club's Morgan Jarvis crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 7:06.273. Bachelors Barge Club's Cody Lowry finished second in a 7:07.343 but earned the national title as the top U.S. finisher. Steel City Rowing Club's Matt Maddamma, who earned a spot on the junior national team yesterday at the 2009 Junior World Championships Trials, finished third in a 7:09.618.
London Training Center's Ashley Brozowicz and Emma Darling won the women's pair by nearly five seconds over USRowing Training Center's Megan Smith and Suzanne Van Fleet. Brozowicz and Darling clocked a 7:19.059, while Smith and Van Fleet finished in a 7:24.004, claiming the national title. USTC's Jamie Redman and Amanda Polk finished third in a 7:27.695.
USRowing Training Center swept the top three spots in the men's pair. Charlie Cole and David Banks walked away with the gold medal, clocking a 6:35.654 to finish more than 11 seconds ahead of Brett Newlin and Jake Cornelius, who crossed in a 6:46.905. Steve Coppola and Cameron Winklevoss finished third in a 6:51.947.
In the lightweight men's pair, Vesper Boat Club's Sean Gibel and Sean Rader crossed the finish line with a time of 6:59.832 to win by a little more than three seconds. Riverside Boat Club's B boat of Anders Corbett and Christopher Culbert edged out Riverside's A boat of Nathanael Kielt and Kyle Lafferty by 0.168 seconds. Corbett and Culbert finished with a time of 7:03.051, with Kielt and Lafferty crossing in a 7:03.219.
USRowing Training Center's Meghan Musnicki and Sarah Trowbridge won the women's double sculls race in a 7:04.595. The duo finished more than five seconds ahead of London Training Center's Isolda Penney and Romina Stefancic, who clocked a 7:09.634. Vesper Boat Club's Bryn Crawford and Shannon Kaplan finished third in a 7:18.633.
The GMS Rowing Center/Penn AC/USTC duo of Steve Whelpley and Michael Sivigny held off Bantam Boat Club's Thomas Graves and Peter Graves to win the men's double sculls. Whelpley and Sivigny finished with a time of 6:22.388, while the Graves brothers crossed in a 6:23.619. Vesper Boat Club's James Dietz and Ben Churchill finished third in a 6:28.452 to earn the bronze medal.
In the lightweight women's double sculls, USRowing Training Center's Michelle Trannel and Kristin Hedstrom came from two seconds back at the 1,000-meter mark to win the gold medal. Teammates Abby Broughton and Lindsey Hochman led the race at the midway point, but Trannel and Hedstrom came back to win with a time of 7:12.777. Broughton and Hedstrom held on for second place, finishing in a 7:13.849. London Training Center's Katya Herman and Kristin Jeffery took third in a photo finish, clocking a 7:14.899.
GMS Rowing Center's Matt Carey and Brian Tryon won the two-boat final in the lightweight men's double sculls. Carey and Tryon clocked a 6:34.048 to finish 2.717 seconds ahead of Vesper Boat Club's Sam Cunningham and Dan Scholz.
London Training Center took the top two spots in the women's four. The crew of Jennifer Tuters, Courtney MacIntosh, Sandra Kisil and Emma Darling won the race in a 6:49.005, while the second boat of Cristin McCarty, Romina Stefancic, Nathalie Mauer and Sarah Waterfield clocked a 6:51.775. USRowing Training Center's Elle Logan, Laura Larsen-Strecker, Karen Colwell and Kelsie Chaudoin finished third in a 6:53.904, winning the national championship as the top U.S. crew.
USRowing Training Center's Brett Newlin, Jake Cornelius, Steve Coppola and Cameron Winklevoss won the final of the men's four, clocking a 6:03.712 to finish nearly four seconds ahead of teammates Max Goff, Sebastian Peterlin, Mike Gennaro and Mark Murphy. Goff's boat finished with a time of 6:07.357. Penn AC's Seth Weil, Peter Carlson, Chris Silva and Greg Yuokon finished third in a 6:12.377, winning the bronze medal.
USRowing Training Center swept the medals in the lightweight men's four. The crew of Will Daly, Taylor Washburn, Matt Muffelman and Brian DeRegt crossed the finish line in a 6:10.201, with the crew of Jimmy Sopko, Ryan Fox, Nick Lacava and Skip Dise finishing second in a 6:12.810. Andrew Deibold, Anthony Fahden, Kenny McMahon and Jonathan Winter finished third in a 6:13.735.
In the women's quadruple sculls, USRowing Training Center's Kate Bertko, Jennifer Kaido, Stesha Carle and Megan Walsh dominated the field. The crew took nearly an eight-second lead in the first 1,000 meters before cruising to a 10-second victory. GMS Rowing Center's Aictoria Burke, Kathryn Robinson, Summers Nelson and Devorie Cox finished second in a 6:43.718, followed by Riverside Boat Club's Natalie Dell, Malyka Ianni, Sarah Schwegman and Siobhan Steyn in a 6:56.961.
USRowing Training Center took the top two spots in the men's quadruple sculls. Elliot Hovey, Will Miller, Glenn Ochal and Sam Stitt had no trouble winning the race, clocking a 5:49.213, while the under 23 crew of Hans Struznya, Martin Etem, Singen Elliot and Brad Werntz finished second in a 6:09.988. The Junior Selection Camp A crew of Michael Wales, Gabriel Fort, Mason Leasure and Will Dannemann finished third in a 6:15.075.
USRowing Training Center's Michelle Trannel, Kristin Hedstrom, Lindsey Hochman and Abby Broughton won the lightweight women's quadruple sculls by three seconds over London Training Center's Katya Herman, Lauren Wells, Tanya Lahdenranta and Kristin Jeffery. The USTC crew finished with a time of 6:37.734, while LTC clocked a 6:40.752. USTC's second boat of Hillary Saeger, Stefanie Sydlik, Michelle Hall and Hannah Moore finished third in a 6:44.514.
In the lightweight eight, the USRowing Training Center B boat of Kerry Quinn, Austin Meyer, Anthony Fahden, Andrew Diebold, Mix King, Chad Healy, Julian Bowling, Matt Kochem and Kenny McMahon clocked a 5:48.082 to win by 3.5 seconds over the USTC A boat of Matt Owyang, Will Daly, Taylor Washburn, Matt Muffelman, Jimmy Sopko, Ryan Fox, Skip Dise, Nick Lacava and Brian DeRegt.
