PRINCETON, N.J. - The six camp-selected boats that will represent the United States at the 2010 World Rowing Championships October 31-November 7 in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand, have been named, USRowing announced on Tuesday.
Competing in the men's eight will be coxswain Ned DelGuercio (Media, Pa.), Tom Peszek (Delaware, Ohio), Jason Read (Ringoes, N.J.), Charlie Cole (New Canaan, Conn.), Jake Cornelius (Brooktondale, N.Y.), Brett Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.), Dan Walsh (Norwalk, Conn.), Mark Murphy (Madison, Wis.) and David Banks (Potomac, Md.). Read won gold in the eight at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, while Walsh won bronze in the eight at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. DelGuercio, Cole, Cornelius, Newlin and Banks return from last year's world championship squad.
Coxswain Mary Whipple (Sacramento, Calif.), Elle Logan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine), Esther Lofgren (Newport Beach, Calif.), Susan Francia (Abington, Pa.), Meghan Musnicki (Ithaca, N.Y.), Kady Glessner (Seattle, Wash.), Jamie Redman (Spokane, Wash.), Amanda Polk (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Erin Cafaro (Modesto, Calif.) will compete in the women's eight. Four Beijing gold-medalists return to the lineup including Whipple, Logan, Francia and Cafaro. At the 2009 World Rowing Championships, Francia and Cafaro won double gold medals in the eight and the pair, while Logan, Lofgren, Redman and Polk won silver in the four.
Competing in the men's four will be Silas Stafford (Santa Rosa, Calif.), Sam Stitt (McLean, Va.), Henrik Rummel (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Giuseppe Lanzone (Annandale, Va.). Stitt finished fifth in the quadruple sculls in Beijing, while Lanzone took ninth in the four. Rummel was a member of the men's pair with coxswain that won gold at the 2009 World Rowing Championships.
Will Daly (Vail, Colo.), Ryan Fox (Edgerton, Wis.), Nick LaCava (Weston, Conn.) and Anthony Fahden (Lafayette, Calif.) will compete in the lightweight men's four. Daly, a 2008 Olympian, and LaCava return to the boat from last year's world championships' squad, while Fox and Fahden won silver in the 2009 lightweight eight.
Scott Gault (Piedmont, Calif.), Elliot Hovey (Manchester-By-The-Sea, Mass.), Wes Piermarini (West Brookfield, Mass.) and Will Miller (Duxbury, Mass.) will compete in the men's quadruple sculls. Gault finished fifth in the event at the 2008 Olympic Games, while Hovey and Piermarini finished 13th in the Beijing double sculls.
Megan Kalmoe (St. Croix Falls, Wis.), Sarah Trowbridge (Guilford, Conn.), Natalie Dell (Somerville, Mass.) and Margot Shumway (Westlake, Ohio) will race in the women's quadruple sculls. Shumway finished fifth in the event in Beijing, while Kalmoe took fifth in the double sculls at the 2008 Olympic Games. Trowbridge was a member of the quadruple sculls that won silver at last year's world championships.
The men's double sculls, women's double sculls, lightweight men's double sculls and lightweight women's double sculls crews were named in late July. The rest of the senior national team squad will be named at the conclusion of the 2010 World Rowing Championships Trials September 27-October 2, 2010.
