2020 Outlook - "Tufts has had great classes come in for
each of the last four years. Along with the one or two
exceptional walk-ons every year we have a large enough
group to field the two eights necessary to compete for
team championship medals in the big regattas in May. The
game has changed -- one eight is just not enough any
longer. With Noel Wanner moving over to coach the women this
year Tufts feels more energized than ever."

2019 Outlook - "That number of returning varsity 8+ athletes may be misleading, since many of them are being heavily challenged by younger oarswomen. We have a group that will be very hard to select from, they are all so similar at this point. Perhaps if we find enough time on the water some boat racing may illuminate everything. If this ice and wind keeps up though, it will just be fingers crossed and we will have to figure it out come May. Getting faster faster is always the goal. Spring hope's eternal."

2018 Outlook - "A very good novice fall, with another win in the 'A' category at the Head of the Fish, and a second place this year in the 'B' group, may bode well for spring depth. The varsity spent a lot of time testing boats, oars, rigging and combinations and it cost us a little at the Head of the Charles, so results in May will depend mainly on good fortune. Whenever we think we've found a bit more speed, there is another New England crew standing 'like greyhounds in the slips, straining upon the start' -- around these parts everyone runs faster to stay in place. Last spring we found that how we DO is out of our control, but that we can year upon year BE better and that continues to be our main goal."

2017 Outlook - “Just when they finally get it, our oarswomen graduate. We have said good-bye to some great ones in the past two years. Luckily the last two classes are filled with fast learners who race well in any conditions. Tufts won both 'A' and 'B' categories for novice collegiate eights at the Head of the Fish; they are motivated. We moved up a place at the Head of the Charles, so we remain broadly competitive. Our problem is in the particulars – on Tax Day we will race Wellesley (NCAA Champions), Wesleyan (3rd), and Bates (4th). None of them show any signs of slowing down. Unless we can pull a lot more speed out of the hat we may again be the sixth fastest varsity eight in the country without a ticket to Lake Mercer in May. Youth, mysterious unpredictable youth, may be our biggest asset.”

2016 Seniors - 7
2016 Outlook - "A top ten finish at the Head of the Charles and several sculling medals at the Head of the Fish are positive signs. That's encouraging because we open against two NCAA podium programs and the following week do it all over again with Bates and Wellesley and Wesleyan, a very strong group that will be looking to keep us home at the end of May. I think we may have enough speed to be competitive and survive those two weeks. In the end, though, we need to put the 2nd derivative in our favor... get faster faster... if we hope to go back to Sacramento. My gratitude to all the New England programs that force us to be stronger."

- 3rd Varsity 8 - 6th at NERC, 7th at ECAC

2015 Outlook - "Daunting. Our spring schedule looks like the 'Group of Death' U.S. Soccer had to face in the World Cup. The good news is that in face of such bleak odds, like Jurgen Klinsmann said, 'we're going to go for it.' And with the right chemistry and some luck, Tufts oarswomen can make a splash in May championships. Respect to all the other New England programs that make this so hard."
