In response to FISA's plans to institute mandatory heart screening at world events (see Rowers face mandatory heart screening at world events), many national governing bodies for rowing are investigating alternative methods of selecting athletes for future teams.
In one nascent plan, presently called the "Grinch initiative," national governing bodies will be seeking out only athletes with small, underdeveloped hearts that don't beat too strongly or ever skip a beat. If through subsequent competition, their hearts grow three sizes, they will be disqualified from competition, and the organization will resume the search for more, well, green athletes with smaller hearts.
