American Michelle Guerette (Bristol, Conn.) finished in second place, less than two seconds behind three-time defending world champion single sculler Ekaterina Karsten of Belarus, in the women's single sculls race this past weekend at the 2007 BKW-Armadacup in Switzerland.
Guerette, a seven-time U.S. National Team member and 2007 World Championships single sculls bronze medalist, covered the nine-kilometer course in a time of 36:50.43. She finished just 1.74 seconds behind Karsten's time of 36:48.69. Karsten won her seventh single sculls title since 1996 at the world championships this past summer in Munich, Germany, while Guerette claimed her second bronze medal in the past three years.
The Netherlands' Marit van Eupen, 2007 World Champion on the lightweight single sculls, finished third. Four-time U.S. National Team member Renee Hykel finished fifth with a time of 38:53.74.
In the men's single sculls, New Zealand's Mahe Drysdale, three-time defending world champion in the event, won the race in a 33:06.94, finishing more than 18 seconds ahead of Switzerland's Andre Vonarburg. Two-time U.S. lightweight Olympian Steve Tucker finished eighth in a 34:37.94.
